K S Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore
The K S Hegde Medical Academy was established in 1999 by the Nitte Education Trust (NET). The institute is named after the visionary and founder, late Justice K S Hegde, former Justice of the Supreme Court and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
The institution is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and is recognised by the Medical Council of India. A 600 bed teaching hospital - Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital with modern diagnostic facilities and super-specialities in Neurology, Neuro-Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Nephrology and Urology, is attached to the medical college.
The institute is situated on a 45 acre campus at Mangalore which is an important sea port on the West coast of Karnataka. It is the district headquarters and is well connected to the neighbouring states by an efficient network of road, rail and air transport.
The Institute started admitting students to the undergraduate course, MBBS from the year 1999-2000 and to postgraduate courses like MD, MS and DNB from 2006. Students are offered the best of opportunities for both theoretical as well as practical training with the help of state-of-the-art facilities, valuable clinical material and guidance by experienced teachers and researchers. The Institute is attached to the K S Hegde Hospital so adequate infrastructural support is available for patients and student training.
K S Hegde Medical Academy is now a constituent unit of the Nitte University and is recognised by the Medical Council of India, Government of India. KSHEMA has signed an agreement of co-operation with the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Houston, USA for co-operation in research on diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. The college has established a state-of-the-art regional research centre on communciable diseases in collaboration with the University of Texas Health Sciences, on the campus. The Institute also has a staff exchange and training programme with Maimonides Hospital, Brooklyn, USA.
Nitte becomes Nitte University
In recognition of our excellence in education and service to the community, the MHRD conferred the status of Deemed-to-be University vide its notification No. F.9-13/2007-U.3(A), Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, (Department of Higher Education) dated 4th June, 2008. A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, the 25 year old dental college was the first constituent college of Nitte University. The college offers 3 courses, B.D.S, M.D.S and Ph.D. The postgraduate course that is, M.D.S is offered in 8 specialities.
Subsequently, in 2009 the UGC vide its notification No. F.26-5/2008(CPP-I), University Grants Commission, dated 24th March, 2009 brought K S Hegde Medical Academy, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy and Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences under the ambit of the Nitte University. With this, the University has 5 institutions all engaged in the areas of education and research in health sciences. We rededicate ourselves to setting new standards in education and health care.
Admission to MBBS At K S Hegde Medical Academy under General Merit category and NRI Quota.
The admission under the General merit category will be through the process of centralised single window counselling on the basis of merit(rank) obtained in the All India Entrance Test, NU UGET conducted by Nitte University.
As per the regulations of the statutory bodies, the minimum percentage of marks in the Entrance Test to be eligible for admission to the MBBS course shall be 50% for General Category candidates.
